In the summer months it rains more and in the winter months it has little to no precipitation. The plants in the desert have adapted overtime by having prickly stems on them to protect their water storage for example the Prickly Pear Cactus has large spines on it to protect its water. Cacti and other succulents can store their water in their roots, leaves or stems so they can survive through the driest and hottest periods. The animals in the desert have also adapted in many ways for example the Roadrunner will shake the naked area underneath the chin to redcude heat, they also eat small mammals and reptiles because it adds more moisture to their system.
