The erosion of rocks make phosphate available to plants through the rocks to the soil. The carbon cycle doesn't ever stop in the desert, it involves the desert plants aborbing the carbon dioxide together with the sunlight and water (phoyosynthesis) to make food and carbon rich compunds, eventually the plants die and the carbon is released into the soil as nutrients and is absored by other sprouting plants.
